Caring for your Calluna

    • Calluna thrives in fairly acidic soil (pH 4.5-6) but is somewhat adaptable especially when used in planters for seasonal color.
    • Soil should be well drained and the roots should never sit in water.
    • You can fertilize Calluna lightly after planting in the garden with an acidic fertilizer (Rhododendron feed will do) and they will not need much feed after that.
    • For the best foliage color, try to find a spot for your Calluna that will receive half a day of sun or more.
    • Calluna blooms well into the fall, and even without flowers, the evergreen foliage provides winter interest. So instead of pruning in the fall, you can prune in the early spring by cutting the branches off below the spent flowers.
    • After enjoying your Calluna through the fall in a planter, remove it and plant in your landscape to enjoy through the winter and for years to come.
    • Calluna prefers not to be exposed to harsh winter winds. Find a south facing sunny spot and protect plants that will be exposed to harsh weather all winter by covering with leaves or trimmed evergreen tree branches. Snow will provide good protection as well.
