Caring for your Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is easy to grow with plenty of sun, light watering, and occasional pruning to stay full and fragrant.
- Place in the brightest spot available indoors, ideally near a south- or east-facing window. Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. If your home is not very sunny, use a supplemental grow light to prevent leggy growth and leaf drop.
- Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, then let excess water drain away. Do not let the pot sit in water — Eucalyptus dislikes soggy roots.
- Use a well-draining potting mix, such as regular houseplant soil amended with perlite or sand. Always use pots with drainage holes and repot every year (or when roots fill the pot).
- Avoid drafty windows, heating vents, or sudden temperature swings. Eucalyptus dislikes cold: do not let the temperature drop below 50°F (10°C).
- Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer. Skip feeding in winter unless the plant is actively growing.
- Prune in early spring to keep the plant bushy and compact. Trim leggy or lanky stems as needed. Remove dead or damaged leaves to promote healthy new growth.
